How to test java exceptions using spring and Junit 5 lib?

I’m in doubt about how to test my java exceptions using the Spring Framework’s own resources.

I’m testing a class called UsuarioValidator.java and in it I have a method called naoPodeInserir(CriaUsuarioDto dto). I have several validations within this method pertaining to business rules for inserting a user into the bank. See one of my methods:

public void isNaoPodeIncluir(@NotNull CriaUsuarioDto model) {
        if (model.apelido == null || model.apelido.isEmpty()) {
            throw new BadRequestException("O usuário precisa de um apelido");
        }
        (...)

}

Each of the entries that go against these rules, it issues an Exception called Badrequestexception. A class I created extending Runtimeexception. See it implemented:

@ResponseStatus(HttpStatus.BAD_REQUEST)
public class BadRequestException extends RuntimeException {

    public BadRequestException(String message) {
        super(message);
    }

}

And my test class, I have the following properties... both managed through a dependency injection...

@SpringBootTest
class UsuarioValidatorTest {

    @Autowired
    private UsuarioValidator validator;

    @Rule
    public ExpectedException thrown = ExpectedException.none();
}

I’m trying to test this part of the process... but I have an error. See my test method implemented:

    @Test
    void insereComApelidoVazioTest() {
        thrown.expect(BadRequestException.class);
        thrown.expectMessage("O usuário precisa de um apelido");
        model = new CriaUsuarioDto();
        model.apelido = "";
        model.senha = "123123";
        validator.isNaoPodeIncluir(model);
    }

The error message that appears on my console, is related to my exception isparo:

How to make this test pass?

The Junit 5 testing library offers many features to work with TDD. One of the methods present is the Assertions.

At this link the methods present in Assertions.

To test a code that returns an Exception, it is simple... see the example below:

@Test
    void invalidLengthThrownTest() {
        value = "Hello";
        String messageError = "The text is invalid length. You need of the field between 2 to 10 characteres";
        String message = Assertions.assertThrows(BadRequestException.class, () -> {
            validation.invalidLength(value, 2, 10, messageError);
        }).getMessage();
        assertEquals(messageError, message);
    }

Simply invoke the method, and the first parameter will specify the exception class it will call. The second parameter is a callback that will call the method that is precisely expected to emit a Badrequestexception. The stamp of improvement in response, I return the message issued by Exception to treat in assertEquals.
