How can I check whether what the user typed in an input text is a website?

As you have specified HTML5, you can define the type of a input of the kind Text. In your case, url:

    @peterq a type Submit has no interface where you can enter a URL. Anyway, I changed the example; now it demonstrates a complete basic form. The form is not submitted if any of the rules fail.

  • Just an Obs: that’s more of a mask than a validation. Just like 'validation' with JS that can be disabled, in HTML, just click 'inspect element', remove type="url" and your check will be removed. Don’t forget to validate on the server side

As indicated by Onosendai, there is a simpler regex string and still serving RFC:
