API for barcode query

Question

I’m negotiating with a company a software to be developed, among the needs arose the registration of the product quickly without needing many user entries. Therefore I had the idea of maybe getting the basic information of the products through some API and etc. This software would be for internal order control in the company, a retail store.

Does anyone know any API both free of charge and payable, where such information can be consulted?

Another idea I had would be to import the XML of the invoice, but for internal control the barcode would be more interesting!

I’m in the mood for new ideas.
