Load javascript depending on the viewport?

It is possible to minimize the download javascript depending on the viewport?

I can put different CSS files to be loaded just by checking the size of the viewport for example.

I’m with a virtual store project that want many animations and effects in the store to desktop, but obviously when loading the version mobile it would download all the js code and I wanted to separate in 2, mobile.js (max 600px), desktop.js and the browser would only download the version "required".

It would be kind of a import CSS only for JS:

@media screen and (min-width: 400px) {
  @import url(desktop.css);
}

@media screen and (max-width: 400px) {
  @import url(mobile.css);
}

I looked into it and found nothing, I’m sorry if it’s something simple, but the ways I tried didn’t work.

To recover the @media width and @media height via Javascript cross-browser and cross-Devices:

As you want to bring a JS dynamically to depend on the viewport, I suggest you put this script at the end of your <body> in HTML.

  • But by doing this the browser will load the entire js and separate only the view, right? What I want is not to load the desktop code when viewed on mobile (max 600px).

A viable solution is to detect the user-agent and determine whether it belongs to a mobile browser or not. The website Detect Mobile Browser possesses scripts in various languages.

Obs: In this example I put a setTimeout to wait for the javascript download. In real situations the code loads the scripts may be right in the head and use within a $(document).ready(...) (having the primacy that jQuery will always be loaded directly).
