Like Frequently Asked Questions about Purchasing Windows Azure:

Yes. With our new Spending Limit feature, customers who sign up for the 90-Day Free Trial, MSDN, or Cloud Essentials offer will be able to use Windows Azure without any fear of being charged, as long as they keep the Spending Limit feature enabled.

And in Windows Azure Spending Limit, there are two parts that draw attention:

  1. Now, by default, all new customers who sign up for the trial offer or one of our offers to members (for example, the MSDN offer) will have a $0 Spending Limit. Good news
  2. When your usage exceeds the monthly amounts included in your offer, your service will be disabled for the remainder of that billing month (...). There is a limit, if you pass it, your service will be disabled.
  3. If the subscription has been disabled because the Spending Limit has been reached, click on the notification: "The subscription has reached the Spending Limit and has been disabled to avoid charges". Otherwise, click "Remove Spending Limit" in the Tasks area. That is, to have your application active, you would have to re-enable payment, and once activated payment, you will never be able to deactivate this Feature.

The only thing that is unclear is whether the basic limit will always be available for free and you only pay the difference, as with the Amazon EC2 free Tier for one year.

So yes, it is possible to use it for free. However, its application cannot exceed the limits imposed by them.

  • Thank you very much for the information Emerson!

The free offer has a duration of 30 days with 200 dollars of credit and the expiration date is for what is reached first. After that you will upgrade your account to the traditional hiring model called Pay-As-You-GO (paid for use).

Regarding the question of being able to use a free web site the answer is yes, even having a PAYG account, each Subscription has as limit 10 free web sites, 1 Mysql database and another SQL Database with the size of 20MB and valid for the first 12 months of use.

Note: Relational Database: one 20MB Azure SQL Database and one 20MB Mysql database are available at the Subscription level for the first Twelve months of use; standard rates apply thereafter.

Reference with table demonstrating the limits of free and local Web site where contains the note above: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/web-sites/

Only some kind of cost will be generated if you use some other resource, otherwise nothing will be charged.

Good luck and success!
