Is it possible to create domains with accents?

Question

I suppose not, but why not? And we have some prediction that it will be accepted someday?

I’m rooting for the namecoin or some new DNS fashion catch up!

Records in Brazil and some international already allow special characters. See this news from Registro.br of 2005:

The domain registration service will accept, from 09/05, characters allowed in the Portuguese language, such as accented vowels and cedilla. With this, They can be registered and accessed sites with addresses as http://www.pãodeaçúcar.com.br.
