I was reading about big data, However, I still can’t understand what the big data would actually be in its essence. I have always used the RDBMS model for data storage and manipulation and at this point I also have doubts related to big data.

Doubts

  1. What is big data?
  2. How big data relates to databases relational?

Big data is a concept that has been talked about a lot in recent years.

In 2000, Doug Laney defined this concept with 3 V’s:

  • Volume - Need to store a large amount of data
  • Speed - Need to get this data quickly and easily
  • Variety - Data can have multiple formats, ranging from more structured formats (tables, textual or numerical data) or less structured formats (videos, audios, images, text documents).

Why Big Data has been talked about so much in recent years and why it’s so important?

  • Increase in the production of data, namely Big Data. This increase has been reflected in the growth of the Internet of Things area. In addition, more and more information is being shared, ranging from consumer behaviour to electronic device data.
  • Growing need to use Big Data. Over the years, many smart products have emerged on the market. The vast majority of these smart products use and generate data for better overall performance.
  • Data sharing is knowledge sharing. This allows companies to identify potential problems more quickly which consequently reduces costs, optimizes products/services and makes the business model smarter.
  • Growth of the area of Artificial Intelligence, named, Deep Learning. Deep Learning is a technique with some years, but only in recent years has there been a massification of this technique. Why? Because Deep Learning needs a huge data set to train its models, which in the past was more difficult to obtain. With the emergence of data in large quantities, Deep Learning has gained a new life and today is perhaps the main sub-area of Artificial Intelligence.

In which areas can be applied the Big Data?

  • Social Data - Data on people’s behaviors. This type of data ranges from social network data, search engines, profiles of people (age, location,...)

  • Business Data - Data generated by companies/organizations from a wide range of sectors (production, marketing, human resources, financial) and aimed at measuring results and identifying potential gaps.

  • Personal Data - This data is linked to an area that is also very popular recently, the Internet of Things. This data is generated from intelligent products, namely products that have access to the Internet, and which usually have some associated sensors. These values can be used for various purposes, depending on their usefulness.
