Basically, it is when we have several devices accessing the network in "peripheral" positions, without being large consumers or data emitters.
An example is intelligent temperature controllers, which raise or lower the temperature based on weather and climate forecasts, thus requiring access to the internet. But such emitters do not need fast and stable connections, as they will not process large amounts of data, such as web pages.
With the advance of cloud computing, it is likely that the "mist" will become much larger than it is today, encompassing various elements of our everyday life, such as coffee makers, refrigerators and other appliances. Note that I did not mention cars, because the trend of automotive vehicles is probably the use of large amounts of data, through positioning and satellite localization, in addition to the "autonomous cars", requiring the processing of a large volume of data, as well as a likely connection between one and the other.
I recommend the courses on the Internet of things from Samsung for a better understanding of the theme.
