What is metadata and how do they work in databases?

I’ve been researching metadata, and they said it’s faster to bring information when it comes to thousands of data lines.

I have a huge database and I wanted more security and more fluidity when it comes to bringing his data.

your question is a little vague, difficult to answer, for example "said it is faster to bring information when it comes to thousands of data lines". Metadata in a simple way are data that explain other data, they are not necessarily the information of a field of the database, I do not see with that has relation to performance.
