Hosting server exchange for websites

A colleague of mine wants to transfer his website to the server that hosts my websites. What I’d like to know is what I really need for this exchange to be made? The agency that owns his website, domain and hosting must change the DNS to my server, correct? If so, isn’t there a risk that at any time they will exchange these dns causing a drop in the site? What can we do to prevent this? Besides, my colleague owns the emails by gsuite, so a domain exchange is not feasible because he has many customers. I would need both the domain and the hosting to be under my responsibility and not the other company to have any kind of access or link after the exchange.

You should point the domain to your server.

That’s practically a "right" risk. When you point the domain to your server, you will get a spread time that is usually up to 72 hours. This propagation happens gradually and can be released earlier in certain regions.

What to do to prevent this from happening?

Keep a replica of the site on the old server and do not suspend it until the spread is complete. Remember that the database should be the same for both servers. Therefore, if the site is on the same (current) server, the new site should point to the old server database. When the propagation time passes, just migrate your database and reconfigure the new server with that database. So you will only stay with the site in maintenance while only migrating...

Simply ask the company that currently manages the domain.
