In college, some colleagues and I are thinking about developing a project that will eventually turn into something big, so it was mentioned using the Wordpress.

More specifically, what’s the difference between me using a CMS as Wordpress or use a framework like the Larable, cakephp, etc? What advantages and disadvantages I have when using each of these options?

And the question of SEO, which takes advantage over which if all are well applied?

The doubt is interesting, but I do not imagine that it is possible an objective answer that covers everything on the subject. It would be a good conversation in the network chat, for example, where more extensive opinions and discussions fit. Your points already allow access to main room of the site - Wordpress is very good for those who need Wordpress. Only you know what your project needs. Remember that great is not the same as good. And that the more a system wants to embrace the world, the more it generally levels downwards, to "please everyone".

If wp didn’t have a "solid foundation", it wouldn’t be as popular as it is today. It is a content control system, so it will serve to control content. If you think you can fart (and will need) a system of this size, shoot! =)

This week I spent an anger with Wordpress. If I were to talk about it, I would say that it is not good to use Wordpress. On the other hand, starting from scratch can make you spend valuable time. I, in my humble opinion, would prefer to use a Framework, since Wordpress has several security problems.

  • Yes, I will not create totally from scratch, I will certainly use a framework, but what are the advantages of using a Wordpress or any other CMS of life and instead of using a framework ?

Superficially speaking, a CMS like Wordpress has a huge knowhow and solid essential tools. An example, it is relatively easy to build a web page from scratch using a framework, but a web page is not that simple. You will need a good semantics for SEO, for example. In this, WP has everything ready. Also the question of modules, themes, the Marketplace and the "sub-markets" that are born around it. There is a whole huge business behind the system. This whole set requires many years and a team 100% dedicated and clear, heavy investments $$.

Another key point is the system’s assurance. WP is all documented, homologated, has communities around the world. If a programmer leaves the company, just hire another one who understands WP and it’s all quiet. Now in an unknown system, even if you have good documentation, if you don’t have a strong popularity and community, you’ll hardly find anyone fit to continue. Normally a new programmer will see that and say "Bah!! it is better to start from scratch using a system like wordpress" and probably it will use these arguments here that usually convince.

You will also hear the phrase "why reinvent the wheel?". It depends on your goal to want to reinvent the wheel. If your goal is to enter the market and compete with existing "wheels", go ahead. Just answer "I’m not reinventing the wheel, I’m creating a better wheel". After all, if the original creators of Wordpress had not reinvented/improved the wheel, the WP and this entire billionaire market would not exist. We would still be using what? joomla? xoops? ez-Publish? And if joomla had not existed, we would be in phpnuke.. and so on. Think about the goal.
