How to maintain systems with gettext?

I developed a system using the library php-gettext and following this tutorial .

Everything worked normally and the language exchange is ok, but this system will change over time and new strings will appear as well as others will leave the system.

How do I change the main file . pot, I do not lose the existing translations in the files . po?

I solved the problem by generating the file .pot the same way as when I created it. Then I opened the file ".po" (with the translations) in PoEdit and used the menu Catálogo > "Atualizar do Arquivo POT.

This function keeps the translated fields.
