What happens when the subscription key expires?

I have read that when the subscription key of the application expires we can no longer update our application on Google Play.

The recommendation of Google is that the key has an expiration date of at least 25 years.

Taking this into account, I have a key that will expire in 2033. It may be that until then my applications will not be used.

I have signed all apps with the same key as it makes some things easier. What will happen when the key expires? Will be able to renew and continue updating my applications or lose them, since it is not possible to update them in Google Play?

Thanks in advance!!!

  • 'It may be that until then my applications will not be used anymore. 'What may happen when the key expires? ' You are in doubt and your concern is valid, because your application can persist yes for more than 25 years you too.

  • Or create new versions of the applications, why not?

  • But to create new versions of the applications I need the signature key to publish them in the Play Store.

In 25 Years you can be sure that Google will make several improvements regarding how to make an application available, and surely the developers will not be on hand. The technology advances and will be different in 2040, do not worry about this issue, it is not the time to spend effort since it is 25 years, until then, you can create another application with another new subscription, but keeping your proposal in the application. There are numerous alternatives, so rest assured.

  • Yes, I agree that the technology will be completely different in 25 years. Creating a new application with new subscription would not be the best way out, since with this I will have to do all the advertising again and so I can lose active users.

  • Well, Google has already said that an expired subscription is an expired subscription, so there’s no way to update your apps. The Solution is you who will decide, I have shown possibilities. There’s no way to call Google and ask them to modify their validity, not right now.

I wonder 25 years from now, will have some Android that will run an App you made today?

  • Interesting placement. I tried to explain in my reply that in 25 years everything that exists today will be different in terms of software and hardware. Let’s hope for a clearer answer, so it’s not an orphan question even if it has a matching answer.

  • I agree with everyone’s position. I just wanted to know the opinion of you and had doubts whether I kept the current key or if I made a new one with longer duration. Do you remember the expiration date of the vcs key? I will keep this current one, if in 2033 the scenario remains I fight to renew this key, rsrsrsrs. Well, I’ll mark that answer as the correct one, but if other people have a clearer answer you can leave it here.
