I’m new to git and I’m using it to control an Asp.net core project in VS 2017. I set up the file. gitignore, but I’m having trouble creating folders. I created, within the wwwroot directory, a folder called "backups" and it was ignored (shouldn’t). Then I created a second folder with the name "uploads" and it was not ignored (it did right). I need to make sure he doesn’t ignore the "backups" folder... Does anyone know how to set up . gitignore for this?

  • The folders are empty?

  • Yes... I would like to not skip these two folders(backups and uploads), but skip the uue files will be recorded inside them.

Problem

Git ignores empty folders.

Solution

A solution is to simply add a file called ". Keep" to the corresponding folder. Now you can prepare and confirm this file as a consequence, also add the folder to version control.

The file . Keep is not a "magic" name, but a convention. Also, the file serves no other purpose than to make your folder visible to Git.

The Backup folder is being ignored as it is in the . gitignore file! Even folders with the Backup prefix will be entered, since it was declared "Backup*", meaning any folder starting with Backup will be ignored!

  1. Remove from file . gitignore the Backup line*/
  2. If the folder is empty, it is necessary to create some file inside it to be versioned, but this is not a good practice, because if there are no files in it, there is no reason to be versioned.
  • Right @egomesbrandao!! but what if I want to ignore only the files inside them?

  • Ignore and keep it empty in Re-po? It doesn’t roll... But let’s be more distracting: Vc has a folder that is generated files in it and does not want to keep anything? Put Backup/*, then all files will not go up to Reset, and important: neither the folder, since empty folder is not versioned. - If you are trying to create this folder in the Object, why you need it to run the project, the best way is at startup of the application you check if it exists, but create it.
