I would like to check if the user is accessing the site by mobile or desktop, how can I do this? for example:

Here is a function that uses an insanely long and comprehensive regex that returns a true or false value, depending on whether or not the user is browsing with a mobile phone.

You can do this by simply running a list of devices and checking if the useragent matches something like:

However, since you believe this method is unreliable, you can assume that any device with a resolution of 800x600 or less is also a mobile device, further narrowing its target (although currently many mobile devices have much higher resolutions than this)
