Captcha error with Magento: Call to a Member Function getBlockName

I manage a virtual store, the site is off the air and when I access the administrator gives this error:

Call to a Member Function getBlockName() on a non-object in /var/www/html/app/code/core/Mage/Captcha/Block/Captcha.php on line 43

  • Have you installed a plugin recently? Are you using something you haven’t used before? Have you been able to access it before

  • nothing new has been done (at least not requested), I am a layperson in this and I am without the support of the responsible agency or I mean, desperate! This is only with programmer same, ne?

  • Yes, but no programmer will be able to solve with so little information, anyway I will search to see if there was any similar problem. Try the answers below for now.

Try to clean the directories var/cache and var/session

Make sure your /var folder has proper permission.

When captcha are created they are first stored in var folder. Due to improper permission it will not be saved. This will return a NULL object, therefore, this error.

  • it is really interesting to check the permissioning of these directories without it would not help to clean them
