I used the toolbar and applied the bold for the fields, which visually changed, as can be noticed in the image, but in the generated pdf the formatting is not displayed. I am using version 4.0.1 of Ireport.

Thanks for posting the image of the field properties, I was wondering if it could have been some special source that wasn’t being processed correctly.
In the properties the Sansserif font is already selected, so I can’t see if it was "above the line" or "below the line" when you click the arrow to select another source. If it was below the line, this means it would not be available to you (it would be present on your system but not available for iReport).
Take a look at this (and on the website http://mdahlman.wordpress.com/2010/05/28/jaspersoft-v3-7-font-extensions/ ) and see if that’s not your case.

Look you can try changing the field "Pdf Font name is now" from "Helvetica" for "Helvetica-Bold" .

Good afternoon, you should select the corresponding source for the PDF by the attribute "PDF Font..." which although it is presented as depreciated keeps working and I also usually mark the option "Embedded PDF".
I’m using version 6.1.1 and still the same thing.
