What is "zabbix"

Properly configured, Zabbix can play an important role in controlling IT infrastructure. This is equally true for small organizations with a few servers and for large companies with a large number of servers.

Zabbix is written and distributed under the GNU General Public License version 2. It means that its source code is distributed free of charge and is available to the general public.

In the list below we have some advantages of using Zabbix:

Open Source Solution; Support for SNMP (v1, v2); Distributed monitoring with centralized web administration; High performance agents (client software for Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, Freebsd, Openbsd, OS X, Tru64/OSF1, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP , Windows 7 and Windows Vista); Flexible user permissions; Web-based interface.

Zabbix is composed of several components:.

Zabbix Server - This is the center of Zabbix Software. The server can remotely scan network services (such as web servers and mail servers) using simple controls. It is the core component for which agents report the availability, integrity of information and statistics of servers. It is where all configuration, statistics and operational data are stored, being the component that will participate actively alerting administrators when problems arise in any of the monitored systems; Zabbix Proxy - It is an optional part of Zabbix deployment. Proxy collects performance and availability data on behalf of Zabbix Server. All data collected locally is transferred to Zabbix Server Proxy. Zabbix Proxy is an ideal solution for centralized control of remote locations, branches, with no need for local network administrators; Zabbix Agent - In order to actively track local resources and applications (such as hard drives, memory, processor, etc.) on networked systems, systems must run Agent Zabbix. The agent will gather operational information from the running system, and inform this data to Zabbix for further processing. In case of crashes (such as a hard drive being full, or a process crashing), the Zabbix server can actively alert the administrators of the reporting machine; Web Interface - Allows easy access to Zabbix monitoring and configuration data anywhere and on any platform. The interface is a part of the Zabbix server, and is usually (but not necessarily) run on the same physical machine as an execution of the Zabbix server.ga
