What is "terminology"
Three main points:
- First of all, the appropriate terminology is concerned with the relationship between the concepts, and between them and their designations, and not with designations alone or with the objects they represent. This point is essential for quality to be achieved, especially with synonyms and in multilingual environments.
- Secondly, a designation does not necessarily have to be a word or phrase, even if often it is. Thus, terminological features may include symbols, drawings, formulas, codes, etc., as well as, or even, instead of, words. This point is especially important given the shift to multimedia systems.
- Thirdly, terminology is closely linked with specialist knowledge and therefore with special languages or languages for special purposes (PEL).
