What is "sudo"

The command sudo of the operating system Unix allows ordinary users to obtain privileges from another user, usually the super user, to perform specific tasks within the system in a manner that is safe and manageable by the administrator.

The name is an abbreviated form of referring to the substitute user of (do replacing user) or super user of (do as super user).
