What is "media-queries"

According to W3 documentation (free translation):

One media query is a method of testing certain aspects of the agent or the user’s device on which the document is being displayed. The media queries are (almost) always independent of the content of document, style or any other internal aspect; they depend only on "external" information, unless another resource explicitly specify that this affects the resolution of media queries, as the rule @viewport.
