What is "mariadb"

Mariadb is a database server that offers functionality and replacement for Mysql. Mariadb is built by some of the original Mysql authors, with the help of the large community of free software developers and open source software.

In addition to the basic features of Mysql, Mariadb offers a rich set of feature enhancements, including alternative storage mechanisms, server optimizations and patches.

Mariadb is primarily driven by the developers of the Monty Program, a company founded by Michael "Monty" Widenius, the original author of Mysql.
