GNU General Public License (General Public License), GNU GPL or simply GPL is the designation of the free software license devised by Richard Matthew Stallman in 1989 under the GNU Free Software Foundation (FSF).

The GPL is the most widely used license by free software projects, largely due to its adoption to the GNU project and the GNU/Linux operating system.
