What is "fortran"

The family of programming languages known globally as Fortran was developed from the 1950s and continues to be used today. The name is an acronym of the expression "IBM Mathematical Formula Translation System".

Early versions of the language were known as FORTRAN, but capitalization was ignored in recent versions of the language starting from Fortran 90. Official language standards refer to it today as "Fortran".

The Fortran language is mainly used in Computer Science and Numerical Analysis. Although it was initially a procedural programming language, recent versions of Fortran have features that allow supporting object-oriented programming.
