What is "char"

A character is a unit of information that roughly corresponds to a grapheme, a unit similar to the grapheme or symbol, such as an alphabet or syllabary in the written form of a natural language. For example, letters (a), digits (1), accentuations (~), scores (.) and space ().

The concept also includes control characters, which do not correspond to symbols in a specific natural language, but to other bits of information used to process text in one or more languages. Examples of control characters include tab and Carriage Return ("car return"), plus instructions for printers or other devices that display or process text.
