What is "boot"

In computer science, boot is the English term for the computer initialization process that loads the operating system when the machine is turned on.

Many computers can perform only existing codes in working memory (ROM or RAM); modern operating systems are usually stored on hard disk, CD-ROM or other storage devices.

Once the computer is turned on, it does not have an operating system in memory. Computer hardware cannot do the actions of the operating system, such as loading a program from disk; thus an apparent insoluble paradox is created: to load the operating system into memory, we need an already loaded operating system.
