What are they, what are they for?

    I’m not going to answer because this is one of the subjects that causes most confusion in computing and I think a very well qualified person on this would need to answer, answers more or less will only increase confusion. I have the impression that this is the single source of most questions here. A note 10 answer would turn canonical to much that is asked here.

Basically:

Charset: Character set you can use.
Encoding: This is how these characters are stored in memory.

I suggest reading the source, this topic on Soen. Or else that article.
